• Think first, do you really deserve a raise?  Is your company in a good enough financial place to offer this option at this time.  If so then…
• Prepare your strategy, Think of the best approach to use after all, you know your boss fairly well. Think about what could convince him and go with it.
• Start preparing your case, you will need to be able prove what you have accomplished for the company and be prepared to show your proof with a smile of course.
• Research the going rate in your area for your position and make that one of your strategies.  Once you have this info copy it save it on paper.
• Collect, prepare and research.  Once you have done these 3 steps you are ready to put together your strategy.
• Prepare a presentation in your mind; think it through so it’s not questionable.
• Now wait for a good time to approach your boss.  But be careful you may want to focus on his mood and his work load.  You do not want to speak with him when his is stressed.
• Never say things like “Such and such got a raise and he doesn’t even do as much as I do”, or “I am leaving if I do not get one”
• Show patience; do not expect an answer immediately.   One week or so is sufficient to make that decision and wait until your boss gets back to you.  Of course unless it’s an unreasonable amount of time.
• The day of approach, remember to be professional, present to him facts and facts only, show proof and rest your case.

Keep in mind that our economy is not in the best shape right now and it is having the same effect all of us and on businesses big and small.  Remember… Whatever you do while negotiating, DO NOT make threats about leaving the company even if you do not get the raise that you asked for.  You may be able to negotiate some comp time or paying less for your benefits or even a few extra days of vacation time.  Don’t forget to ask your boss what you can do to improve yourself in the future in hopes to grow and make better money with your company.  Good luck!
