  • Educate and talk to your children, keep an open relationship with your children even if it means sometimes hearing things that you do not want to hear. The most important thing to teach our children about Good and Bad touch.  In fact most schools are educating our children about this already.  So it doesn’t hurt for us to also explain in detail what a good/bad touch is and to reassure our children that we will always be there to listen to them.  Do this in a calm way.  Make sure your child understands and explains to you the difference between a good and a bad touch.
  • Know your children’s friends and their parents invite them over to your house for coffee, tea and go to their house and meet them, see how they live and the type of people that they are.  This way you get a feel for the company your child is keeping.
  • Teach your child to never to answer the door alone, if they are home alone tell them to never answer the door at all.  The same rule should apply to the phone, never give out personal information like…(my parents will be back or they are not here right now) this is not the right thing to say, even if your child is familiar with the person who is calling. Remember a lot of abductions and child pedophiles are either someone close to the family or a family member.  Teach them to say things like… (My father is in the shower or the bathroom he will call you back).
  • Encourage your child to get a buddy system, while walking to school or waiting for the bus.  There is safety in numbers.
  • Share a family code word, explain to your child that unless this person says the code word that they can not go with this person or except rides with this person.  Be sure to change your code word once a month.
  • Emphasize to your child the importance of people who ask children for directions, adults should be asking adults for directions not children.  If an adult stops to ask directions tell your child to run to a safe spot.
  • If someone is attempting to take your child, tell your child to yell “FIRE, FIRE, FIRE” this will get other people’s attention.  Once they have attention then tell your child to yell “I DO NOT KNOW THIS PERSON!”  Tell them to yell it loudly and do not stop until the person lets him/her go.
  • Tell your children to follow his/her gut instinct, we all have instinct  so talk to your child about this and teach them how to follow his/her gut feelings.
  • Make a safe call, always know where your children are, it is important to teach them responsibility by checking in when they get to their destination.  Most children today have cell phones and it only takes a minute to make a phone call.
  • Phoning 911, teach your child how to dial 911, what to say, and make sure they know the important information to give.  Name, address, phone number, mom and dad’s name and what the problem is that they are calling about.

These are just a few tips that I have taught my children for safety purposes and continue to re enforce week by week.  It is our job as adults to educate and keep our children safe.  Remember too much information is better then not enough.

Children are so precious and it only takes one person to damage a child for life.  Please look at this link and make educate yourself and be aware of your surroundings. www.familywatchdog.us
